Dozens of inmates escape prison in DR Congo's Kasai province

At least 50 inmates have escaped from Luebo prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Kasai province, in a mass breakout that occurred overnight from Thursday into Friday, August 1-2, 2026. Officials suspect security personnel may have been involved, and three rifles were taken during the escape. A search operation is underway for the fugitives, some of whom are considered dangerous, raising public safety concerns.
