New York Teacher Unions Challenge SUNY Over Alleged Violation of State Charter School Cap

The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) have filed a legal challenge against the State University of New York's (SUNY) Charter School Committee. The unions allege that SUNY illegally approved the transfer of a Success Academy Charter in the Bronx to a new entity called Strive Charter School, circumventing New York City's statutory cap on charter schools. The petition, filed in New York County Supreme Court, argues that state law does not permit the transfer of an existing charter to a new entity and that Strive did not complete the required competitive application processes, including community outreach and public hearings.
