University of Houston Considers Major Cuts to Core Curriculum Under New Texas Law

The University of Houston is evaluating a proposal to remove nearly 40% of its core curriculum courses to comply with a new Texas law (Senate Bill 37, passed in 2025). The proposed changes would eliminate approximately 100 courses, including those focused on global climate change, Black liberation theology, women's studies, and LGBT studies. While these courses might still be offered outside the core curriculum, faculty members have expressed concerns about potential enrollment reductions and registration bottlenecks. The recommendations are currently in draft form and await a final proposal to the UH System Board of Regents in August.
