Federal Rule Links Student Aid Eligibility to Graduate Earnings

The U.S. Department of Education has introduced a new accountability rule, effective July 2027, that could restrict federal student loan and Pell Grant eligibility for college programs whose graduates consistently earn low incomes. This framework will assess program performance based on graduate earnings compared to relevant benchmarks. Programs failing to meet these benchmarks for two out of three years risk losing access to federal financial aid.
