Democrats Push Back Against Proposed Dismantling of U.S. Education Department Offices

Eighty-six House Democrats are urging the U.S. Department of Education to halt plans to transfer the Office for Civil Rights and the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services to other federal agencies. Lawmakers argue that only Congress can eliminate these offices or change their responsibilities, and that the proposed moves could weaken federal protections and services for students. The Department of Education, however, maintains that the changes will not diminish civil rights protections or services for students with disabilities.
