Senators Advance Bill to Block Education Department Program Transfers

U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, along with Senators Tim Kaine, Maggie Hassan, and Tammy Baldwin, have advanced legislation (S. 5046) to prevent the Department of Education from transferring critical offices and programs, such as those for Special Education, Postsecondary Education, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Indian Education, to other federal agencies. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee favorably reported the bill, citing concerns about the receiving agencies' lack of staff and expertise.
