Private Nonprofit Colleges and Universities Contribute $838.9 Billion Annually to U.S. Economy, Supporting Over 4.1 Million Jobs

A new report released by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) on August 4, 2026, highlights the substantial economic impact of private, nonprofit higher education institutions. During fiscal year 2024, these institutions generated $838.9 billion in economic output, supported more than 4.1 million jobs, and added $535.1 billion to the nation's gross domestic product (GDP). The report emphasizes that the economic benefits extend beyond campuses, with nearly 60% of the impact occurring through supply chains and household spending.
