U.S. Department of Education Proposes Overhaul of Higher Education Accreditation System

The U.S. Department of Education has proposed new rules to reenvision the postsecondary quality assurance system, aiming to simplify accreditor recognition, promote student return on investment, and increase competition among accrediting agencies. The proposed changes also seek to safeguard against undue influence from private trade associations, eliminate discriminatory policies, and promote academic freedom and intellectual diversity.
