New DHS Rule on International Student Visas Causes Concern at Higher Education Institutions

A new rule from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), announced last month, is generating confusion and anxiety among international students and faculty at U.S. higher education institutions. Starting September 15, international college students on F-1 or J-1 visas will be limited to a four-year stay, after which they must reapply. The rule also imposes stricter limitations on academic changes and reduces the grace period for visa holders to leave the country, transfer schools, or change visa status from 60 to 30 days.
