Bonamici Reintroduces Bill to Prevent Student Loan Borrower Default Through Automatic IDR Enrollment

Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) has reintroduced the Streamlining Income-driven, Manageable Payments on Loans for Education (SIMPLE) Act. This legislation aims to prevent student loan defaults by enabling the Department of Education to notify at-risk borrowers and automatically enroll them in income-driven repayment (IDR) plans. The bill would allow ED to access taxpayer information from the IRS for automatic enrollment, simplifying the process for struggling borrowers.
