Study Reveals AI Tends to Grade Student Essays Higher Than Human Markers

New research published in the journal Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education indicates that generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, do not reliably reproduce human judgment in marking extended written work, often returning higher average marks than human graders. In one instance, the difference between an AI grade and a human grade for an essay was 40 points out of 100, raising questions about the future of assessment in higher education.
