Guyana Government Cancels $175.6 Million in University of Guyana Student Loans

The government of Guyana has written off $175.6 million in loans for 204 students under the University of Guyana (UG) student loan debt write-off program during the first half of 2026. This action is part of a broader commitment to alleviate financial burdens on students, with total loans forgiven since the initiative began in 2024 reaching $3.2 billion. The university also expended $7 billion in the first half of the year to expand access to essential disciplines like medicine and engineering.
