States Roll Back Pay Incentives for Teachers in High-Need Areas Amid Persistent Shortages
A new report from the National Council on Teacher Quality, released today, indicates that many states have withdrawn pay incentives for teachers in hard-to-staff subjects and schools, despite ongoing chronic shortages. Seventeen states now offer or require bonus pay for teachers in shortage subjects, down from 22 in 2022, and fewer than half as many states differentiate pay for teachers in high-poverty schools.
