Music Publishers Sue Anthropic Over Alleged Copyright Infringement in AI Training

Sony Music and Warner Chappell have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, developer of the Claude AI chatbot, in a U.S. District Court. The publishers accuse Anthropic of "brazen theft" by allegedly using millions of copyrighted songs and books, obtained through torrenting and scraping, to train its AI technology. They seek up to $150,000 per work, potentially totaling billions in damages, raising significant questions about AI's use of copyrighted material.
