California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new law, Senate Bill 1050, mandating that advertisers disclose when artificial intelligence is used to generate realistic actors in audio, video, or audiovisual advertisements. The legislation, sponsored by SAG-AFTRA, aims to provide consumers with greater transparency and protect human performers from the expanding commercial use of generative AI. The law is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
