U.S. Current Account Deficit Expands in Early 2026

The United States experienced an increase in its current-account deficit during the first quarter of 2026, reaching a total of $226.8 billion. This represents a $5.8 billion, or 2.6%, expansion compared to the previous quarter. The deficit now accounts for 2.9% of the nation's current-dollar gross domestic product, a slight rise from the 2.8% recorded in the prior period.
