Eurostat reported that the general government gross debt in the euro area increased to 88% of its gross domestic product (GDP) by the end of the first quarter of 2026. The broader European Union saw its government debt ratio climb to 82% during the same period. The government deficit for the euro area stood at 3% of GDP in the first three months of the year.
