RBI Rejects Tata Sons' Deregistration as NBFC, Mandates Listing
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has rejected Tata Sons' application to surrender its non-banking financial company (NBFC) registration. This decision requires Tata Sons to comply with upper-layer NBFC regulations, including listing on stock exchanges. The move follows years of uncertainty regarding the company's regulatory status, despite its efforts to prepay debt and achieve a net cash positive position. The RBI had previously included Tata Sons in its updated list of 17 upper-layer NBFCs in August 2026.
