FDA Approves New Active Ingredient for Over-the-Counter Sunscreens

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a final order to update the monograph for over-the-counter sunscreen products. This amendment includes bemotrizinol as an approved active ingredient, following a scientific review. The FDA concluded that bemotrizinol is generally recognized as safe and effective for use in sunscreens at concentrations up to 6 percent.
