Gene Therapy Shows Early Promise for Inherited Heart Disease
A phase 1 clinical trial has indicated that a novel gene therapy is safe and shows initial signs of effectiveness for patients suffering from Friedreich ataxia cardiomyopathy. Researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine found that an intravenous infusion of a healthy gene was well-tolerated. Early results suggest a decrease in heart wall thickness and reduced markers of heart damage.
