U.S. Experiences Critical Shortage of Bicillin L-A, the Only Domestic Drug for Congenital Syphilis

The U.S. is facing a critical shortage of Bicillin L-A (penicillin G benzathine), the only domestically manufactured drug for treating congenital syphilis. Supplies are not expected to return to normal until December 2027, following a voluntary recall by Pfizer due to foreign material in some batches. This shortage is particularly concerning as congenital syphilis cases have more than tripled in recent years.
