Study Reveals Rapid Spread of Drug-Resistant Sexually Transmitted Shigella in England

A new nationwide genomic epidemiology study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, indicates that sexually transmitted *Shigella sonnei* is spreading faster, over greater geographic distances, and with higher transmission intensity than non-sexually transmitted strains in England. This drug-resistant infection, traditionally known as food and water-borne, is primarily affecting sexual networks of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
