Oral GLP-1 Agonist Orforglipron Demonstrates Superior A1c Reduction Compared to Dapagliflozin in Type 2 Diabetes
A new study, ACHIEVE-2, published in The Lancet, found that the once-daily oral GLP-1 agonist orforglipron was non-inferior and, in fact, superior to dapagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, in reducing HbA1c levels in adults with type 2 diabetes uncontrolled on metformin. Orforglipron led to HbA1c reductions of 1.23% to 1.56% across different doses, compared to 0.81% with dapagliflozin. While mild-to-moderate gastrointestinal events were more frequent with orforglipron, no severe hypoglycemia was reported. This research suggests a potent oral option for glucose control, though dapagliflozin's established cardiovascular and kidney benefits remain a key consideration.
