WHO Reports Intensifying Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo, Largest Ever Recorded in the Nation

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported an intensifying outbreak of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with a significant increase of 1481 confirmed cases and 759 deaths since July 17, 2026. This makes it the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the DRC, with a total of 3605 confirmed cases and 1587 deaths as of July 30, 2026. The outbreak has expanded to five provinces and 49 health zones, with the highest weekly numbers of cases and deaths recorded recently. Insecurity, population displacement, and cross-border movements are complicating response efforts.
