Extended Therapeutic Hypothermia Offers No Benefit for Neurological Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest, Large Trial Finds

A significant randomized clinical trial, published in JAMA, has concluded that extending the duration of therapeutic hypothermia beyond a few hours does not improve neurological outcomes in comatose survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The study found no evidence that cooling patients to 33°C for more than 6 hours provided additional benefits. These findings suggest that shorter, standardized durations of therapeutic hypothermia should be supported in clinical practice.
