Study Shows Antibiotic Stewardship Reduces Unnecessary Use in Hospitalized Cancer Patients

A secondary analysis of the NIH Collaboratory's INSPIRE trials, published in JAMA Network Open, found that an antibiotic stewardship program significantly reduced the use of extended-spectrum antibiotics in hospitalized cancer patients. The program utilized automated prompts providing patient-specific risk information to clinicians. This scalable strategy offers a method to improve antimicrobial use in a vulnerable population.
