Antibiotic Stewardship Program Reduces Unnecessary Antibiotic Use in Hospitalized Cancer Patients, NIH-Backed Study Finds

A secondary analysis of data from the NIH Collaboratory's INSPIRE trials revealed that an antibiotic stewardship program, which utilized automated prompts to provide patient-specific risk information to clinicians, significantly reduced the use of extended-spectrum antibiotics in cancer patients hospitalized with infection. These findings, published in JAMA Network Open, extend the benefits of the INSPIRE program to a population where judicious antibiotic prescribing is particularly crucial.
