Health Officials Urge Caution for Gulf Coast Beachgoers Amid Surge in Deadly Vibrio vulnificus Infections

Health officials in Louisiana are advising beachgoers to take precautions due to a summertime increase in Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria found in coastal waters. Louisiana has confirmed nine cases this year, resulting in five deaths, a notable increase compared to previous years. Florida has also reported cases. The bacteria can enter the body through open wounds exposed to brackish or saltwater, and individuals are urged to seek immediate medical care for symptoms like redness, swelling, pain, warmth, or discoloration around a wound.
