New Federal Rules Mandate Accessible Medical Equipment for Healthcare Providers

Federal regulations are now imposing new requirements on healthcare providers to ensure better accessibility for people with disabilities. These rules mandate the widespread adoption of accessible medical equipment, including weight scales, examination tables, and X-ray machines. Hospitals and doctor's offices utilizing examination tables or weight scales must now have at least one that meets accessibility standards, and staff must be qualified to operate such equipment and assist with patient transfers. These largely identical rules were issued by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services, with the HHS rule taking effect on July 8.
