Research Links Alpha-Gal Syndrome to Previously Unrecognized Transfusion Risk

An international epidemiologic study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, has uncovered a potentially lethal transfusion risk associated with alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). AGS is an allergic condition often triggered by lone star tick bites. The discovery followed a severe transfusion reaction in a heart surgery patient later found to have AGS antibodies, underscoring the need for increased awareness in transfusion medicine.
