Early Statin Use Linked to Lower Dementia Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Patients, Study Suggests

A large observational study presented at ESC Congress 2026 and published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe found that early initiation of statins after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis was associated with a 15% lower relative risk of dementia over 10 years, compared to no statin treatment. Late initiation was associated with a 10% lower risk. Researchers suggest these findings, while observational, could inform discussions between patients and clinicians regarding dementia prevention.
