STAREE Trial Finds Statins Reduce Non-Fatal Cardiovascular Events in Healthy Older Adults, No Impact on All-Cause Mortality

Results from the STAREE trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, indicate that statin therapy in community-dwelling adults over 70 with no history of vascular disease or dementia led to a reduction in non-fatal myocardial infarctions and strokes. However, the study, which randomized approximately 9,000 participants to atorvastatin or placebo, did not find an improvement in all-cause mortality. Adherence to statin therapy decreased significantly over the six-year study period.
