Early Statin Initiation in Type 2 Diabetes Linked to Lower Dementia Risk

A nationwide Danish analysis, presented at ESC Congress 2026 and published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, suggests that starting statins soon after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis is associated with a lower risk of dementia. Patients who began statin therapy within a year of diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of dementia at 10 years compared to those who did not start within five years. This research highlights the potential importance of early intervention for cognitive outcomes in diabetic patients.
