FDA Approves Rusfertide, a First-in-Class Treatment for Polycythemia Vera

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved rusfertide (Mimrylo), a first-in-class hepcidin mimetic, for the treatment of erythrocytosis in adults with polycythemia vera, a chronic blood cancer. This novel subcutaneous weekly therapy regulates iron to control the overproduction of red blood cells, marking a potential shift in the treatment paradigm for patients whose disease has not been adequately controlled with existing therapies.
