Philadelphia Department of Public Health Confirms First Human Cases of West Nile Virus for 2026

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) announced the identification of the first four human cases of West Nile Virus in Philadelphia for the current year. West Nile Virus is a neurologic infection spread by infected mosquitoes. While most infected individuals remain asymptomatic, one in five may develop fever and flu-like symptoms, and one in 150 can develop severe infections leading to brain or spinal inflammation, potentially resulting in death. The PDPH is urging residents to take preventative measures, such as wearing mosquito repellent and eliminating standing water.
