Thousands of Low-Income Patients at UCLA Health Face Disruption as Medi-Cal Contract Expires

Thousands of low-income patients, many with serious illnesses, are scrambling to find new healthcare providers after UCLA Health's long-standing Medi-Cal contract expired on June 30. The contract previously provided specialty care to approximately 9,000 medically frail patients from Health Care LA, an association of nonprofit clinics. While a tentative agreement has been reached to transition patients over the next year, the initial disruption has left many patients, including those needing cancer treatments, organ transplants, and high-risk women's services, without immediate access to care.
