Global Cancer Cases Projected to Surge 67% by 2050, Prevention Efforts Crucial

A new analysis led by the American Cancer Society (ACS) reveals that global cancer cases could increase by 67% to 34 million by 2050, primarily due to growing and aging populations. In 2024, nearly 21 million people were diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and 9.8 million died from the disease. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of both new diagnoses and deaths globally, with tobacco as a primary driver. Researchers emphasize that nearly half of cancer deaths may be preventable through intensified efforts in tobacco cessation, infection avoidance, alcohol moderation, healthy weight maintenance, and increased physical activity.
