Australia Approves Cefiderocol for Carbapenem-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacterial Infections

Shionogi & Co., Ltd. announced that the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia has granted marketing authorization for cefiderocol. This siderophore cephalosporin is approved for the treatment of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections, which are increasingly difficult to treat due to antimicrobial resistance. The approval is based on results from three global clinical trials: APEKS-cUTI (complicated urinary tract infections), CREDIBLE-CR (carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections), and APEKS-NP (hospital-acquired pneumonia). Cefiderocol is expected to provide a new treatment option for patients with these challenging infections.
