Early Statin Use Linked to Lower Dementia Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Patients

A nationwide Danish study, presented at ESC Congress 2026 and published in The Lancet Regional Health - Europe, suggests that initiating statin treatment soon after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may be associated with a reduced risk of developing dementia. The study, involving over 132,000 people, found that those who started statins within a year of diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of dementia over 10 years compared to those who did not. This observational research highlights a potential benefit of early statin therapy beyond cardiovascular protection, particularly for a population at increased risk of cognitive decline.
