CDC Merges Influenza and Coronavirus Divisions to Enhance Respiratory Disease Response

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reorganized its National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) by merging its Influenza Division with the Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Diseases Division. This new Influenza and Respiratory Viruses Division (IRVD) aims to strengthen operational efficiency, pandemic preparedness, and laboratory capabilities for seasonal epidemics and pandemic respiratory viral diseases. The reorganization became effective on September 4, 2026, with the official notice published on September 9, 2026.
