Study Shows Early, More Powerful Treatments Prevent Long-Term Complications in Crohn's Disease

A study led by Addenbrooke's Hospital, published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, provides evidence that initiating advanced biologic medications like infliximab or adalimumab earlier in Crohn's disease patients leads to better long-term outcomes. The "top-down" approach, where patients receive advanced treatment soon after diagnosis, resulted in a two-fold lower likelihood of disease progression and hospital admission, and a five-fold lower risk of needing abdominal surgery over an average of five years, compared to current guidance which typically delays such treatments until symptoms become more severe.
