Early 'Top-Down' Treatment for Crohn's Disease Shows Significant Long-Term Benefits in New Study

A study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology provides strong evidence that initiating advanced biologic medications, such as infliximab or adalimumab, early after a Crohn's disease diagnosis can lead to better long-term outcomes. The trial, which followed over 350 patients for an average of five years, found that those receiving 'top-down' treatment were twice as less likely to experience disease progression or hospitalization, and had a five-fold lower risk of needing abdominal surgery, compared to those on conventional 'step-up' therapy.
