Early "Top-Down" Treatment for Crohn's Disease Reduces Long-Term Complications

New findings published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology on September 11, 2026, indicate that an early "top-down" treatment approach for Crohn's disease significantly reduces long-term complications. The PROFILE trial, which followed over 350 patients for an average of five years, found that those receiving early anti-TNF therapy were two times less likely to experience disease progression or hospital admission, and had a five times lower risk of needing abdominal surgery compared to the standard "step-up" approach. These results are expected to change global treatment guidelines for newly diagnosed Crohn's patients.
