Phase 3 Trial Shows Mitapivat Significantly Reduces Transfusion Burden in Thalassemia Patients

Results from the ENERGIZE-T phase 3 trial, published in The Lancet, indicate that mitapivat significantly reduced the transfusion burden in adults with transfusion-dependent alpha-thalassemia or beta-thalassemia. The double-blind, randomized, multicenter, placebo-controlled study found mitapivat to be generally well tolerated, demonstrating a favorable benefit-risk profile. These findings support mitapivat as the first oral disease-modifying therapy for adults with transfusion-dependent alpha-thalassemia or beta-thalassemia, offering a new treatment option to reduce the need for transfusions in this patient population.
