New European Guidelines Unify Management of Cardiovascular and Chronic Kidney Disease

New guidelines issued in August 2026 by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Renal Association (ERA) establish a unified approach to managing cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. These guidelines aim to increase routine kidney function and urine albumin testing in patients with cardiovascular disease, utilizing blood creatinine tests for estimated glomerular filtration rate and urine tests for albumin-to-creatinine ratio. The 'STAMP on CKD' framework has been introduced to streamline clinical practice, organizing patient care into five priorities: Screen, Triage, Address CKD Risk, Modify CVD management, and Plan health services. This represents a significant shift in clinical strategy, urging clinicians to integrate cardiology and nephrology care.
