Major Clinical Trial Explores CT Scan for Statin Risk Assessment

A large clinical trial, the CorCal Outcomes trial, investigated a new approach to statin risk assessment by using CT scans to detect calcium buildup in heart arteries. This scan-based strategy led to fewer individuals being recommended statins, with major cardiovascular events occurring at a similar rate (2.7%) in both the scan-based and traditional risk assessment groups after 4.2 years. However, the trial could not definitively prove the scan-based approach was non-inferior due to a lower-than-expected number of cardiovascular events.
