A pooled analysis published in The Lancet Neurology indicates that higher plasma phosphorylated tau 217 (p-tau217) levels are associated with a greater risk of cognitive impairment, particularly in adults carrying the apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE-ε4) allele. The study found that APOE-ε4 carrier status also helps estimate the timing of cognitive impairment, with each standard deviation increase in p-tau217 levels linked to a 24% shorter time to impairment among APOE-ε4 carriers.
