FDA Detects Cyclospora at Mexican Farm Linked to Large Lettuce Outbreak
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that its inspectors found cyclospora, a parasite linked to a large foodborne illness outbreak, at a Mexican farm. The parasite was detected in a wastewater tank and a drainage ditch used for lettuce cultivation. This development follows the CDC's declaration of an end to the multi-state outbreak, which affected nearly 13,000 people, hospitalized 570, and caused two deaths. The FDA's announcement comes after a previous retraction of a faulty test result and a separate investigation by Mexico's food safety authority that did not detect cyclospora.
