Optogenetics Therapy Restores Light Sensitivity in Retinitis Pigmentosa Patients
Results from the GS030 PIONEER Phase 1/2 trial, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, indicate that an optogenetic gene therapy helped approximately half of late-stage retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients regain light sensitivity. The treatment involves an intravitreal injection of an AAV-based therapy and light-stimulating goggles. This represents a promising development for individuals with severe vision loss due to RP.
