Minimally Invasive Procedure Offers Lasting Pain Relief for Knee Osteoarthritis
A new minimally invasive procedure, genicular artery embolization (GAE), has shown significant promise in providing lasting pain relief for individuals suffering from knee osteoarthritis. A study involving 194 patients revealed that the treatment, which uses tiny dissolvable particles to block abnormal blood vessels, led to substantial reductions in knee pain and improved mobility for at least 12 months. Eighty percent of patients reported clinically meaningful pain relief at the one-year follow-up. This technique aims to interrupt the inflammation and abnormal blood vessel growth contributing to chronic knee pain, potentially offering an alternative to joint replacement surgery.
